To properly understand networking there are typically a few key things you must know.  But to properly troubleshoot and administer a network, there are many, many more.  One of these key things is understanding how networks work on all levels, including the most basic element, which is the physical link.  In this article I hope to show you the seven layers that make up the OSI (Open Systems Interconnect) model of network infrastructure and how they relate to your network and the data that is traveling across it.
