The Utilities section of the KDE menu is a
simple, multipart menu that contains a multitude of useful utility applications that will
make your KDE experience so much easier. Now lets look at each of these and how they
may benefit you.
Accessibility
This folder contains five easy to use tools to help you to more easily see or hear what
you are working with while using KDE. Here's what's available.
- Kmag - Screen magnification tool. Allows you to enlarge what's on
the desktop to see it better. Just pass your mouse over anything you want to see
better and Kmag enlarges it for you in a little side window.
- KmouseTool - A simple utility for clicking the mouse for any user who
can't due to injuries of any shape and size that make it either difficult or painful to
click the mouse. Also allows for dragging, but that takes some practice.
- Kmouth - This tool allows your computer to speak for you. It
doesn't include a speech synthesizer, so you'll need to have one already installed.
- KSayIt - This is a text-to-speech frontend for KDE.
- kttsmgr - This is the text-to-speech manager for KDE.
Desktop
This is a set of desktop applets that assist you, the user, in a variety of simple, yet
common task that you will undertake in KDE in a productivity environment.
- KCalc - KDE scientific calculator. It has a scientific advanced
calculator mode complete with functions buttons and a standard calculator configuration.
- KNotes - Little yellow "sticky notes" for your desktop so you
can make notes and save them. You can even share them with others.
- KPager - This provides a thumbnail sketch of all your desktops.
Similar to the desktop pager that's in your taskbar.
- Klipper - Very, very useful clipboard management utility. It's
priceless if you copy and paste a lot of things. Includes a long history of previous
copied items and allows you to select and past anything from history you want.
- KTip - A simple tool that provides you with useful tips.
- SuperKaramba Desktop Widgets - This is a widgets tool that creates
eyecandied desktop widgets in much the same way as the Apple Dashboard.
File
The File folder includes four simple utilities to help you with file management.
- Ark - Simple archiving and extraction program.
- KFileReplace - A simple search and replace tool for files.
- KHexEdit - A hex editor for editing files on the binary level.
- KPalmDoc - A converter for PalmDOC files.
PIM
These seven utilities are simple tools that are part of the KDE Personal Information
Manager system. The folder includes the following items.
- KAlarm - A personal alarm clock. Configurable with numerous alert
options.
- KArm - This is a personal time tracker. Allows you to keep track
of how long you spent doing various things.
- KDE Groupware Wizard - Allows you to setup connections to Novell
groupware servers.
- KGpg - An encryption tool for keeping your files secure.
- Kjots - A note taking program to allow you to jot down notes and
organize them.
- KTnef - A TNEF file viewer.
- MultiSynk - A frontend for KDE's kitchensync synchronization framework.
Peripherals
This folder contains several utilities that you would find useful to you when handling
peripheral devices on your machine. The folder includes the following items.
- IRKick - A KDE server for infrared control of your devices.
- Kfloppy - A graphical frontend for formatting floppies so you don't
have to dive into the console to do so.
- KJobViewer - Allows you to view print jobs that are pending and waiting
to be printed.
- KPilot - A tool for working with your PalmPilot.
- Kandy - A mobile phone interface tool.
- Kdeprintfax - A simple KDE fax utility.
More Applications
This last folder provides you with a selection of four miscellaneous tools which you
can use to take care of some not so common things.
- KCharSelect - A character selection tool. I have no idea what
you'd use this for, but it's there.
- KFontView - A simple font viewer.
- KRegExpEditor - An editing tool for creating regular expressions for
programming.
- Ktimer - A simple tool that allows you to set the number of minutes or
seconds until a particular command is run or program is executed.
Well, that's our overview of the Utilities section of the KDE menu. We hope this
was informative to you and you find these tools useful.
