Open Source Gaming Review: Assault Cube 0.92 (Page 1 of 1)

Assault Cube is an open source 3d shooter done in the old school deathmatch style of gameplay, but with much newer graphics. Gameplay is especially good in this game due to the way it's implemented. Unlike the original Cube and Cube 2 on which it's built, Action Cube provides you with a much better and fuller gaming experience. I've found that it runs much smoother, has zero lag, and the gameplay is quite a bit more fun and challenging. It's like mixing what made the old school FPS games fun with a lot of what makes modern games, little counterstrike, fun as well.

The game opens with a small and simple map to allow you to get a feel for your environment, then with a few simple keystrokes you can begin either a single player game against bots, or an online multiplayer game against humans, whichever you feel is smarter. I say that because the Action Cube developers have really done a great job with the bots. I'm not sure what they did, but when the bots are set on their highest level, they're absolutely brutal. Your life expectancy is very low at that point.

The levels themselves are rather challenging, putting you into situations where you need to move, shoot, and strategize effectively to survive and win. Just because you're the best FPS player in the world doesn't guarantee that you'll be the last man standing in this game. Each of the weapons, players, handicaps and maps are very well balanced for a game of this type allowing everyone a fair chance to win.

Another thing that makes this game stand out is that, although it doesn't use the latest graphics, the levels look surprisingly realistic. Almost surreal in a sense. The way the characters move and weapons operate gives the user a feel of reality that seems to be lacking in a lot of modern games. There are glitches, as is to be expected of a game like this which is still in development, but they're few and growing less by the day.

System requirements aren't too bad either. They call for:

1GHz or higher CPU
256MB RAM
GeForce 4 MX or equivalent GPU.

However, if you want to play at the maximum settings. The requirements are a bit stiffer. You'll need at least:

2GHz or higher CPU
512MB RAM
GeForce 6600 or equivalent shader model 2.0 GPU

And at Maximum, the picture is, in my humble opinion, as good as, if not better in some ways, than many proprietary offerings.

So as you can see, it's a fairly modern game with fairly modern requirements. But don't let that stop you. Since it's a free game, the most it'll cost you is your time, a computer of at least the required minim size and an internet connection, which if you're reading this, you likely already have. The game itself weighs in at an impressive 19mb. That's it. Not 300mb, not 600mb. 19 meg. And they pack an incredible amount of stuff in that 19mb. The game is free, so why not download it and give it a try. The game is available for MacOS, Linux and Windows. With enough practice, even you can become a fearsome and powerful master of Assault Cube!
